A terminal will not be able to process payments or accept transactions without a merchant account. A terminal is essentially just a point-of-sale machine that allows you to accept card payments; without a merchant account, it would be unable to process any sales. In order to process credit and debit card payments you must have a merchant account with a financial institution tied to your terminal.
